Interesting watching the MoTD EPL highights, seeing how VAR has actually made refereeing decisions worse.
Spurs game was ridiculous, Harry Kane quite obv backed into a BHA player, you even saw him having a wee look back to make sure he knew where the boy was to back into him as he was in the air, so he came down on top of Kane. If anything it was a foul against Kane and a booking for dangerous play, with intent to injure the guy as he wouldn't have been able to land on his feet.
Thought i was going mad when both commentators didn't even mention it as such, ignoring what Kane had done, thankfully it was picked up in the studio by the ex player pundits. Anyway, the ref and VAR got it wrong, awarding Spurs a penalty. Fecking hell!!!
He later evened it up with another balls up of a decision, when a Spurs player was clearly fouled, letting play continue for VAR to check it, and BHA scored. VAR check and the goal stood as they concluded it wasn't a foul, it's quite legal to follow through onto the Spurs players ankle, apparently. The ref even went to VAR screen for a check, and still got it wrong!!!
Seems VAR has changed the rules, they're more interested in if contact was made on the ball or the player first, and forgot about dangerous play where being out of control you follow through and injure a player, it's still a foul even when you get a wee nick on the ball. And when someone backs into a player who is up in the air, you look at the whole picture, to include the events leading up to contact, and not just the point of contact/impact.
Kane actually had 2 looks checking where the BHA player was, firstly seeing he had jumped up to head the ball, then a wee glance back as he was reversing into him, to make sure he got into the right position, inexcusable to miss that when you have VAR checking, but they obv don't look for things like that, and just concentrate on the point of contact.
The time they take for VAR to get offside decisions is bad enough, getting it down to minute fractions, where an oxter or arse is minesculely offside, if we ever get it up here then i hope to feck they have figured out how to use it to enhance the game and help officials with difficult to spot decisions, and not nit pick over every fecking little thing and ruin the game as an entertaining spectacle for fans.
